Parent Participation

At WMCC, we believe in nurturing a strong sense of community between students, parents, staff, and nature. We have operated as a co-operative-style school since 1974, steeped in the tradition of creating experiences that cultivate interconnectedness and supportiveness. This connection begins with the first ferry ride together and builds through our daily curriculum and events.

Parent participation and collaboration are vital to the shaping and strengthening of our cherished community. The Centre and students’ achievements hinge on this support and encouragement. The sentiment that it takes a village to raise a child rings true at WMCC! For these important reasons, parents are required to commit 20 hours per family, per school year, of volunteer time.

There are many ways for families to volunteer their time:

  • Serve on the Parent Board – participate in the operation and governance of the school

  • Join a Board Sub-committee – fundraising initiatives, special events, school promotions, special projects

  • Join a Work Party – help with housekeeping and building maintenance

  • Help Out on a School Day – assist in serving lunch, cleaning toys, doing odd jobs, etc.

Parents are required to attend the Annual General Meeting and Executive Board Elections. We also encourage parents to attend our wonderful pot luck suppers/concerts, curriculum night, and graduation – all special opportunities to get to know each other, support our children, and cultivate deeper community spirit!
